Sony fans call for one-week “PSBlackout” as preservation debate escalates

X (@DoesItPlay1) – A growing movement within the gaming community is encouraging PlayStation players to step away from Sony’s ecosystem for one week this August.

The campaign, organized under the hashtag #PSBlackout was announced by gaming preservation advocate DoesItPlay? on X (formerly Twitter), urging people to refrain from logging into PlayStation services, playing games through Sony’s platforms, or making purchased during the proposed blackout period.

“Sony wants to abandon fans? Let’s give them a small taste of their own medicine! Together with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony’s platforms.”

Why are fans calling for a blackout?

The campaign centers on concerns over game preservation and digital ownership, issues that have become increasingly prominent as the industry shifts toward digital storefronts and live-service ecosystems.

Many supporters argue that consumers spend money on digital games and services only to risk losing access later due to store closures, server shutdowns, or licensing expirations.

The “Sony wants to abandon fans” language used in the campaign reflects the frustrations of organizers rather than an established fact. Those backing the blackout contend that Sony has made decisions over the years that prioritize current business goals over preserving access to older games and purchased content.

Preservation history concerns

The latest campaign didn’t emerge overnight. Over the past several years, Sony has faced criticism for multiple preservation-related issues, including:

  • The attempted closure of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores in 2021 before reversing course following public backlash.
  • The gradual shutdown of online services for older PlayStation titles. The limited availability of classic PlayStation games compared to fan expectations.
  • Ongoing questions surrounding ownership rights for digital purchases and long-term accessibility.

While none of these issues alone sparked the current movement, advocates say they represent a broader trend that has left many collectors and preservationists uneasy.

What Is #PSBlackout Asking Players To Do?

Organizers are calling for participants to avoid all activity across Sony’s gaming ecosystem for one week.

That includes:

  • Not logging into PlayStation Network.
  • Not playing games through Sony’s platforms.
  • Avoiding purchases on the PlayStation Store.
  • Holding off on subscriptions or other PlayStation-related spending during the blackout period.

Unlike petitions or letter-writing campaigns, the initiative aims to demonstrate consumer dissatisfaction through a temporary decline in engagement and spending.

The bigger picture

The #PSBlackout campaign reflects a larger conversation extending well beyond PlayStation.

Across the industry, players continue to debate:

  • Who truly owns digital games.
  • How companies should preserve legacy titles.
  • Whether consumers should expect permanent access to purchased content.
  • The responsibilities publishers have once online services come to an end.

As gaming becomes increasingly digital, these questions are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
